Canon has announced one of its strangest lenses yet. The novelty is designed to work in tandem with the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera. The key feature of the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens is that it is equipped with two fisheye lenses at once. This design is designed to help content creators capture photography and VR videos.
According to reports, the new lens can be used to record video at resolutions up to 8K. However, this can only be done on one camera – EOS R5. Apparently, the lens is only compatible with this model. This is also supported by the fact that Canon promises to release a new firmware version for the R5, as well as a Premiere Pro plug-in and a separate application for converting recorded files. The latter will be released under the name EOS VR Utility.
You can buy a new lens for $1,999. The camera itself will cost users $3,899. As a result, a kit for creating VR content will cost about $6,000. Moreover, users will have to pay separately for the software, which will be distributed by subscription.
However, if we compare Canon’s solution with competitors’ cameras, then the difference in price will not be too big. For example, Insta360 Pro 2 costs about $5,000. It should be borne in mind that the set of EOS R5 and the new lens has great versatility.
The RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye will be available in December. Simultaneously with the start of sales, the software will also become available to users.
