M1 Max GPU could be better than PlayStation 5

On October 18, Apple introduced the updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021 with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. According to Apple, the power of the latest GPU can compete with the Sony PlayStation 5.

Representatives of Cupertino at the presentation said that the M1 Max chip uses 70% less power at peak graphics performance than laptops with a discrete graphics card. At the same time, the MacBook Pro 2021 consumes 100 watts less power.

If we analyze the graphics of the new M1, here is what data we get regarding the processing of teraflops Macbook Pro 2021:

  • M1 8-core = 2.6TF;
  • M1 Pro 14 cores = 4.5TF;
  • M1 Pro 16 cores = 5.2TF;
  • M1 Max 24 cores = 7.8TF;
  • M1 Max 32 cores = 10.4TF.

Note that the Sony PlayStation 5 can handle up to 10.28 teraflops. But these estimates are not based on real tests, but on the calculations of specialists, so they may not be entirely correct.

The new MacBook Pro 2021 is more expensive than the PlayStation 5. It should be borne in mind that we are now talking about a portable laptop that is quite competitive with the top gaming console.
